To Quilt Or Not To Quilt???

I've been wanting to make a quilt for some time now
But quite frankly, it scares the crap out of me!
It looks like there's SO much work involved
All the cutting...
And sewing all the tiny pieces together...
And binding...
And whatever else you have to do
AHHHH!!!

Anyway, I have a childhood friend who's having a baby at the end of the year and I thought maybe I would start with a baby quilt for her. Then I might not feel so overwhelmed?? But still make a decision on whether I like quilting or not.

So I need some advice from my lovely readers...

Do you quilt?
Do you like it?
Is it easy?
Am I going to have to sell a kidney to support this hobby?
What's this about jelly rolls and charm packs??
What's your best resource for a first timer?
Should I buy a walking foot?

HELP ME PLEASE!!!
I would really love you for it :)

Much Love~

  1. I work at a quilt shop in Texas, so yes, I *quilt* and love it (my machine hates it, so we're kinda just piecers.) Yes, you may have to sell organs or children to support this hobby. We joke at work that illegal drugs would be a cheaper addiction. I don't think it's that hard, but I only make easy quilts, not too many pieces or fussy bits. My biggest problem has been with accuracy (can't fudge the cutting and seams must be 1/4 inch) My best resources for information about charms, jelly rolls, and layer cakes are www.modabakeshop.com and Missouri Star Quilt Company's youtube channel. The bakeshop has "recipes" for each of the precuts, ranging from small crafty projects to full on quilts. Missouri Star has great tutorial vids and many of their early ones were kind of precut basics, explaining the differences and how to use them. Personally, I don't think you can go wrong with a layer cake, there are tons of possibilities. I don't know about a walking foot. I know many folks have them and swear by them, mine doesn't seem to like my machine and causes problems for me. Check out your local quilt shops for advice, ideas and help and have fun with your project!
